David Fotland joined the company in December 2000. In the newly created position of Chief Technology Officer, he is responsible for all aspects of defining, designing, and developing next-generation Internet processor chips and connectivity solutions.

During his 21 years at Hewlett-Packard, Mr. Fotland served variously as lead engineer, project manager, and system architect. He was a key participant in the PA-RISC instruction set definition, and was lead designer of the first PA-RISC processor and system and other PA-RISC processors. He was also a leader in the development of the HP-Intel IA-64 (Itanium) instruction set, architecture and micro-architecture. In addition, Mr. Fotland was a system architect for Hewlett-Packard's N Class and Superdome mid-range and high-end systems. He also invented the system performance analysis methodology and tools that Hewlett-Packard now uses to evaluate PA-RISC server system alternatives. Mr. Fotland holds four patents -- three on instruction sets and one on system design.

Mr. Fotland wrote "The Many Faces of Go," an artificial intelligence game that won the 1998 World Computer Go Championship and is the top-selling computer Go game in the U.S. and Japan. He holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and an MS in Computer Engineering from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.
