Ubicom Delivers First 'Works with Windows Vista' Router Platform
StreamEngine 5000™ Technology Offers Home-Networking Device Manufacturers a Fast Path to Full Integration with Windows Vista
Sunnyvale, Calif. — Nov. 6, 2006 — Ubicom®, Inc., a leading provider of communications processor and software solutions, has announced that its StreamEngine 5000™ router reference design is the first to qualify home-networking device manufacturers for Microsoft's 'Works with Windows Vista' hardware certification program.
Consumers who use networking products based on the Ubicom reference platform can take full advantage of the Microsoft® Windows Vista™ operating system. They will experience simple network setup and management, reliable audio and video streaming, built-in network diagnostics, and reliable Internet connectivity for streaming applications, such as online gaming and VoIP calls.
In developing the first router reference platform, Ubicom used the Microsoft Windows Rally™ connectivity technologies to ensure ease of use, compatibility and reliability. For developers, Ubicom's software development kit (SDK) includes a robust implementation of the features required for qualification such as:
- Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) protocol, which enables users to discover and manage their devices with the Network Explorer and Network Map features in Windows Vista
- Wi-Fi Protected Setup / Windows Connect Now (WCN) Config 2.0 which delivers simple, secure-by-default Wi-Fi network setup
- Xbox Live® service compatibility
- Quality of service (QoS) for games, audio and video
"Home network users, and Windows Vista users in particular, will have a great end-to-end experience, whether they're streaming music from the Web, or playing games on Xbox Live. The Ubicom router platform meets a high quality bar for quality of service, easy setup, and robust networking that's perfect for the exciting applications that Windows Vista will deliver," said Glenn Ward, group partner manager at Microsoft.
"Achieving the 'Works with Windows Vista' qualification is a rigorous process so we're delighted to be the first to complete it," said Keith Morris, vice president of marketing at Ubicom. "This will give our customers the ability to quickly and easily develop networking products for Windows Vista."
Microsoft recently used Ubicom's platform to demonstrate the networking capabilities of Windows Vista during the Intel Developer Conference in San Francisco. The demonstration showed how easy it is to set up a network and transfer media between devices using a PC running Windows Vista and a router with the Ubicom StreamEngine 5000 processor.
About StreamEngine® Technology
StreamEngine® technology delivers an enhanced online experience by employing powerful quality of service (QoS) mechanisms. The key to making this useable for a home or small office is 'Intelligent Stream Handling' — a patent-pending algorithm which automatically manages the flow of traffic going to the Internet, without the need for user configuration. As a result, real-time interactive traffic, such as gaming, VoIP, instant messaging and video conferencing, are automatically given the appropriate priority when other users and applications use the network. In addition, Intelligent Stream Handling minimizes the impact of large-packet, lower-priority traffic on latency-sensitive traffic and eliminates delays caused by DSL or cable modem connections. StreamEngine effectively eliminates the lag and breakup problem in online gaming and other voice/video applications.
