Ubicom Chooses Global IP Sound To Create a Resilient Voice-over-IP Platform for the Embedded Market
Chips and Software Work Together To Make VoIP Calls Clear and Reliable
2007 International CES, Las Vegas — Jan. 8, 2007 — Ubicom®, Inc., a leading provider of communications processor and software solutions, announced today that Global IP Sound (GIPS) software can be used with the Ubicom StreamEngine 5000™ processor to build Internet voice gateways. People may use these gateways to make clear calls even when the network is busy.
Applications such as email, Web browsing, file and photo sharing, and downloading music must share the Internet connection with voice-over-IP (VoIP) calls. They can cause Internet connections to become congested when they are used at the same time. This congestion is the reason why many VoIP calls are dropped or have poor sound quality.
"Broadband service providers are concerned that peer-to-peer file sharing is causing problems with their VoIP service," said Keith Morris, vice president of marketing at Ubicom. "Service providers are eager for technologies that let subscribers use their broadband connections for both accessing the Internet and making calls reliably."
Ubicom's StreamEngine® technology gives voice calls priority on the Internet connection, even when the connection is running at full speed. The Ubicom processor is multithreaded which means that processing power can be reserved for making calls. The processor also has special instructions for digital signal processing (DSP). These instructions are used to turn packets into voice very efficiently.

Global IP Sound's software includes patented technologies that deliver superior voice quality even when voice data is lost or delayed on the network. This includes NetEQ, an adaptive jitter buffer and error concealment module that dramatically improves sound quality while minimizing latency for IP telephony systems. The Ubicom software development kit (SDK) includes GIPS technology as part of the self-contained ipVoice™ software module. This module also features G.711, G.729AB and G.726 codecs, and subscriber line interface drivers.
Pricing and Availability
ipVoice is in beta testing with early access partners. It will be available as an extension to Ubicom's SDK 7.4 version in the first quarter of 2007. Pricing is available on request.
