Ubicom Delivers 2.5 Million 802.11n-Compliant Chips for Wireless Home Routers within Calendar Year 2007
Growth driven by strong consumer approval ratings for Ubicom-based routers
Sunnyvale, Calif. — Dec. 19, 2007 — Ubicom®, Inc., a leading provider of communications processor and software solutions, has delivered more than two and a half million StreamEngine® family processors in 2007, confirming that the transition to the 802.11n draft 2.0 standard is well underway.
Ubicom has created processors and a software development kit that support the complete range of 802.11n product offerings from the lowest cost entry-level fast Ethernet routers to the highest performance dual-band gigabit routers. With Ubicom's purpose-built software stack and StreamEngine technology for reliable and stable performance of voice, video and data applications, these products are gaining rapid acceptance in the end consumer market. A recent analysis of online consumer product reviews1 showed that 77% of reviewers scored Ubicom based routers as either 5/5 or 4/5. This is in comparison to only 47% for other 802.11n routers and demonstrates a dramatic difference in overall customer approval of Ubicom technology.
"We could not be more excited that Ubicom has surpassed the previous estimates for delivery of StreamEngine family processors into the 802.11n segment," said Cathal Phelan, CEO of Ubicom. "Even more gratifying is that our focus on innovation and quality is resulting in products that consumers rave about."
"The number of devices connected in home networks will grow significantly to more than 900 million on a worldwide basis by 2011," said Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst with Parks Associates. "The role of 802.11n in increasing the range and performance of wireless networks will be critical, as 40% of network nodes will be addressing multimedia and entertainment functionality. Ubicom's StreamEngine technology is a critical component in providing ample processing performance to enhance media and online gaming applications."
About StreamEngine Technology
Ubicom's StreamEngine technology delivers an enhanced online experience by employing powerful quality of service (QoS) mechanisms. The key to making this useable for a home or small office is "Intelligent Stream Handling" — a patent-pending algorithm which automatically manages the flow of traffic going to the Internet, without the need for user configuration. As a result, real-time interactive traffic, such as gaming, VoIP, instant messaging and video conferencing, are automatically given the appropriate priority when other users and applications use the network. In addition, Intelligent Stream Handling minimizes the impact of large-packet, lower-priority traffic on latency-sensitive traffic and eliminates delays caused by DSL or cable modem connections. StreamEngine effectively eliminates the lag and breakup problem in online gaming and other voice/video applications.
